# Nuzky: free, open source video editor

> Nuzky is a free, open source desktop video editor in the spirit of CapCut, made for Reels, TikTok and Shorts. It runs on your computer, writes captions locally with Whisper and lets an AI agent such as Claude Code or Codex edit the open project while you watch.

Status: in development. The first version for macOS, Windows and Linux is coming soon. Current version: 0.1.0. License: GPL-3.0-or-later.

No account, no watermark, no subscription. Editing, captions and export run on your computer; an AI agent you connect sees the transcript and the frames it checks.

## Features

- Vertical 9:16 canvas, plus 16:9, 1:1 and 4:5
- Opens phone and camera footage, including HEVC, H.264, variable frame rate, rotated and front camera video
- Magnetic main track with overlay video, audio and text tracks
- Trim, split, move and delete with snapping, undo and redo
- Edit by text: delete words in the transcript and the video cuts with them
- Keyframes, speed, entry and exit animations, transitions and filter presets
- Text with outline, background box, colour, position, rotation and opacity
- Auto captions on your computer with no limit, seven caption styles and a highlight on the spoken word
- Clean voice for speech recorded with room noise or hum
- Real-time preview with sound
- MP4 export from 720p to 4K with no watermark, drawn by the same renderer as the preview
- Reels and TikTok preset: 1080 × 1920 at 30 fps, sound levelled to −14 LUFS
- Saves after every edit and recovers after a crash
- AI agents edit the open project through MCP: Claude Code, Codex or any MCP client, with one undo per run (not on Windows yet)
- Learns how a creator edits from their finished cuts into an EDIT.md that agents follow

## From raw clips to a finished cut

1. Drop in your clips. Nuzky opens video from any phone or camera, including HEVC and variable frame rate.
2. Caption it. Whisper writes the captions on your computer. Pick a style and fix any word it misheard.
3. Export anywhere. Choose Reels and TikTok or any size you need. The file matches the preview.

## Or let an agent cut it

Connect Claude Code or Codex in one click, or any MCP client, and ask for an edit in plain words. It runs on your own Claude Code or Codex plan: cut the ums and long pauses, add captions, put music under the video, export for Reels. The agent edits the project open in the app. Every change goes through the same undo as yours, your controls lock while it works with a Stop button, and one undo takes the whole run back. Live editing in the app does not work on Windows yet.

## Questions

### Is Nuzky really free?

Yes. No subscription, no watermark on your videos and no sign-up. Nuzky is open source, so it stays free. If you let AI do the editing, it runs on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan.

### When can I download it?

Soon. The first version for Mac, Windows and Linux is on its way. If you have a GitHub account, watch Nuzky's releases and you'll get an email when it's out. [Nuzky releases on GitHub](https://github.com/tomasmach/nuzky/releases)

### How is Nuzky different from CapCut?

Nothing in Nuzky is locked behind a paid plan, so export never asks you to upgrade. It's made for editing on a computer. CapCut has more templates and effects, and a phone app. [Compare Nuzky and CapCut](https://nuzky.app/capcut-alternative.md)

### Are the auto captions free?

Yes, with no limit. Nuzky writes captions from what you say, right on your computer. Pick a style, make the spoken word light up and fix any word it got wrong.

### Are my videos private?

Yes. Your videos stay on your computer, and nothing gets uploaded to edit, caption or export them. If you ask an AI to edit for you, it sees what's said in the video and the frames it checks.

### Can AI edit the video for me?

Yes. Type what you want, like “cut the ums and pauses and add captions”, and watch it edit in the app. Stop it any time, and one undo takes it all back. It runs on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan, and doesn't work on Windows yet.

### Will videos from my phone work?

Yes. iPhone and Android videos open the right way up, selfies included, and every cut lands on the exact frame you picked.

### Is it ready for TikTok, Reels and Shorts?

Yes. Pick the Reels & TikTok export and you get a vertical 1080 × 1920 video with the volume levelled for social apps.
